News > Express buses for Keele!

Published 12 July 2012

A new bus network for Newcastle is being launched in September this year. It will feature an express bus link between Keele University and Stoke-on-Trent City Centre with a journey time of around thirty minutes.

This follows the recent exciting announcement of the successful joint bid by Staffordshire County Council and Stoke City Council for the Department for Transport’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund, worth £10.5M, which will now see improvements to road infrastructure along the route between Keele University, Newcastle and Stoke-on-Trent City Centre to help buses remain on time.

A spokesperson for Keele University said: "Keele University is delighted at the successful outcome of the County and City Council's Local Sustainable Transport Fund. Clearly sustainability is a key aim within Keele's Strategic Plan, including improved public transport, which in turn helps us reduce the number of car journeys to campus and reduce our carbon footprint.  ?"The University would like to formally thank all those involved in the bid and also bakerbus for working with the University to understand the needs of our students, staff and visitors. Cutting travelling times will be a major boost, offering an alternative form of transport. ?"We look forward to working with bakerbus, along with the County and City Councils to ensure the successful implementation of these new services."

The scheme will also see buses linking Newcastle town centre with Knutton, Silverdale, Park Site and Keele University. Phil Baker, Managing Director of bakerbus, said “This new venture builds on our thirty years of association and travel provision for Keele University and we are very much looking forward to introducing our usual high quality service provision, which will prove hugely beneficial to Keele University and the whole area, west of Newcastle.”

Full details will be published over the coming weeks and timetables will be delivered door to door in local areas.
